Which Character Set Encoding should be Used?

Character encoding must be specified for sites of all languages. Server-side or client-side or each, it doesn’t matter.

The W3C recommends character sets be specified in HTML Document Representation and XHTML Entity Sets which states “The XHTML entity sets are the same as for HTML 4, but have been modified to be valid XML 1.0 entity declarations.” Two noteworthy articles have been presented: Why Web authors must specify character encodings was referenced by Roger Johansson in Always specify character encoding [March 30, 2006] and, The Web Standards Project Specifying Character Encoding which was originally written December 2002 [Updated, January 5, 2006].

Still.

Which character set? should be used by Western sites?

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">
This character set is also referred to as “Latin-1” and is usable for most Western European languages.

Or,

<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-5">
This character set is usable for most Western European and Cyrillic languages.

Or,

<meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">
This character set supports Latin-1, Cyrillic and Japanese, Cherokee, Esperanto et al characters.

It’s a web standards dilemma.

Therefore, in the continued spirit of Flying Monkeys from Borneo, we present the following as examples set from sites which meet web standards for those aspects of fundamental web development unfathomable when starting-up.

And, in no particular random order.

Or,

What Character Encoding was used?

  • None = 4
  • iso-8859-1 = 14
  • utf-8 = 32

It seems Content-Type Encoding UTF-8 is preferred.

Numerous articles may be found in search engine results but these are my selected recommendation for using UTF-8: Anne van Kesteren’s Quick guide to UTF-8 and On the Goodness of Unicode by Tim Bray [which was last updated April 6, 2003].

Not that you couldn’t use ISO-8859-1.

Monkey whom-so-ever you want but specify it.
